The following question came from Browne Goodwin

After covering the bottom of my Chrysalis wing, it doesn't seem strong enough. Should I be concerned?

"I have completed the wing structures of the Chrysalis, and have covered the bottom only (with regular Ultracote). At present, the wings seem to twist very freely, and I am concerned that even after covering the upper surfaces, there will be too much twisting freedom remaining.

Should I be concerned, and, if so, what can you suggest to correct this problem?"

Reasonable question, but you don't need to worry. In just about any structure that relies on the outer shell for stiffness of some sort, you don't get anywhere near the designed stiffness until the "box" is closed, in other words, until all outside surfaces are covered. The Chrysalis wing is no exception. I think you'll find that the stiffness will be drastically greater when you finish the rest of the covering.

If you're still nervous, get an empty shoe box. Remove the lid, and try twisting the box. Now tape the lid back on securely and try to twist it again. A little better, isn't it? ;-)

There are differences between the different covering brands, and we have had 1 report of flutter with transparent Micafilm. We have not had any problems in our own tests with Monocote, regular Micafilm, and Lightweight Ultracote (which is less stiff than the regular Ultracote you are using). Just do a good covering job, make sure the covering is tight enough to get the wrinkles out, but not so tight that you cause the ribs to bend. Make sure that you set the washout after covering as shown in the plans. Don't worry, your wing's stiffness should be fine.

Enjoy your Chrysalis, and please keep in touch!
