I'm just wondering since you have added the new Spectre's to your line up
[and discontinued the Monarchs and Wizards] will you be getting rid of the
Chrysalis HLG and the Chrysalis 2M any time soon?"
From : Don Stackhouse
I presume your concern is based on our discontinuing of the Monarchs and
Wizards. We did that because the Spectres outperform those models at all
speeds, the tooling (particularly the fuselage molds AND the plugs they
were made from) for the Monarchs and Wizards was worn out, the Monarchs and
Wizards had become very labor intensive to make (so if we continued
producing them we would have to price them HIGHER than the Spectre series),
and the demand for the Monarchs and Wizards since we introduced the
Spectres simply wasn't high enough to justify going through all the
necessary trouble to replace the tooling and keep them in production.
Yes, a number of folks have asked us why we don't drop the price on the
Monarchs and supposedly get enough extra sales to keep them in the lineup.
In business management terms, that would fall under the category of
"selling at a loss and trying to make up for it in volume", a guaranteed
way to quickly go bankrupt. Now if those folks would be willing to spend
$50 or more EXTRA to get a Monarch instead of a Spectre, it might work, but
in that case I would strongly recommend to those folks that they seek some
professional counselling. The Spectres are better airplanes.
The Chrysalis situation is TOTALLY different.
No need to worry, the Chrysali do not compete with the Spectres. They're in
a completely different market niche. The Chrysalis series has NEVER been a
competitor performance wise vs. our composite ships (except maybe at the
very beginning with the original Chrysalis HLG, whose ability to compete
very favorably against our old wood-winged Monarch 'C' is what prompted us
to develop the Monarch 'D'). The Chrysali are relatively low-cost, simple
wooden sport airplanes for folks who like the look of built-up wood, or who
want to have fun on a budget. The Spectres are no-holds-barred contest
airplanes. There's plenty of room in the world for both, and in fact many
folks who start out with a Chrysalis later go on to get a Spectre.
As long as the various Chrysali continue to sell well enough to justify the
effort, we will continue to sell them.
