I am an experianced flyer and want to know if you ever tried
alerions and elevator only on the P-38?

Yes, we did.
If so,how effective were the controls?
Truly AWFUL. Likewise, we've tried just rudder only with no ailerons and
once again, the airplane was essentially uncontrollable. The Roadkill
models all use coupled rudder and ailerons because they NEED coupled rudder
and ailerons. Yes, it's quite a bit more linkage to provide for both. We
absolutely would not go to all that extra trouble if it wasn't absolutely
necessary.
On the P-38 there is one more option we haven't tried yet but are planning
to soon. We're going to install two Pixie 7 ESC's, mixed to both the
throttle and rudder channels in the transmitter, so we can use differential
power for yaw control. This eliminates the need for rudder hinging and
linkages, and also allows us to lighten up the inboard sections of the
aileron torque rods. This will probably weigh the same or less than the
rudder linkages it replaces, and give us independent yaw and roll controls
in the bargain. We might leave the nosewheel free-castoring as well to
eliminate its pushrod. I'll be posting something to AJ&D as well as the
e-flight and slow-flyer e-mail lists as soon as we have some test results
on this concept.
I do not plan to ROG or fly in doors, so no need for steerable nose wheel.. Thanks
You can have it both ways. Each strut on the landing gears of all the
Roadkill models (except for the tailwheels on the single-motor kits) is
mounted with a single screw. Just loosen the screw, lift the strut wire out
from under the screw head, and tighten the screw back down so it doesn't
vibrate out in flight and get lost. On the P-38's nosewheel, you also
unhook the steering pushrod's Z-bend fromthe arm on the servo.
The models do fly noticeably better with the landing gear's weight and drag
removed. OTOH, it's fun to be able to do touch and goes, scale taxi-outs
and take-offs, etc., when flying indoors or from a paved outdoor flying
area (we've found that well-lit shopping mall parking lots make great
flying areas after the mall closes and all the cars leave). That's why we
designed the gear to give you both options!
