Also having never built a laser kit is it necessary to remove the scorch marks from the edges to get a good glue joint.

That's optional. Some folks use some chlorine bleach on a cotton swab to take it off. Personally, I almost never bother with it. C/A seems to soak through it just fine. Thick plywood pieces (much thicker than any of the ply in a Roadkill model) can sometimes have a lot more charring on the edges (mainly due to the glue between the plies), and if the edges are badly coated with soot, I'll lightly scrape or sand that off, if that edge is going to be a critical part of the joint. Otherwise, it's usually not worth the trouble.
