The following question came from Steve Henke: "SRH2@pge.com" SRH2@pge.com )

My year old 2m Spectre is getting a little battle damaged and I would like to paint parts of it. Can you tell me what color white will match the stock finish?

I tried a couple white gloss spray cans I had in my shop and they are pretty far off from a good match.

That might be a bit tricky, it's very difficult to match two different whites exactly if they didn't come from the same batch. We paint the mylars with Krylon #1501 "Glossy White" lacquer. Unfortunately, it's likely to be nearly impossible to match the texture of the painted-in-the-mylars surface, which also seems to influence the perceived color. Your best bet might be to carefully build it up with a series of thin coats, then wet-snd it and rub it out to blend with the adjacent surfaces.

Another, possibly easier option would be to paint the repaired area with a contrasting color as an enhancement to visibility. You need to be a little careful with this, to avoid painting dark colors on a portion of the upper surface that sees high loads during launch or in flight. Black paint in direct sunlight on a hot summer day can exceed 180 deg.F, enough to seriously weaken most composites! However, provided that you can avoid this problem, a contrasting tip could hide a repair and still look very good.
