The following question came from Frank Slaughter " )

Is the Spectre v-tail removable? If not, how hard would it be to make it removable?

From : Don Stackhouse

As designed it's not removable. We've found that V-tails snuggle nicely into the corner of a seat, or the corner between the side and the bottom of a cargo area or of a shipping container, so removing them isn't usually necessary. That being the case, having a removable tail just reduces strength and/or adds weight at one of the worst possible places for that on the entire airplane.

However, some folks really do need a removable tail. What has worked well in this case is to wax the aft end of the tailboom and plug the last 2" or so with a pine block, notched out on its sides to clear the pushrods, then glue the tail on as usual. Lay up about 6 ounces worth of fiberglass around the top of the tailboom and about 1" up the upper surface of each stabilizer. Drill a couple screw holes downward through the glass and into the pine block, about 1/4" aft ofg the leading edge, and about 1/4" forward of the hinge line. If you did a good job with the waxing, you should be able to pop the tail loose from the tailboom after the fiberglass has completely cured. trim up the edges of the fiberglass, slip the tail back on, install the screws and you're all set!

It's a little more weight and work than the normal mounting, but an acceptable compromise if you really do need a removable tail.
