How should I install a throwing peg in the Monarch Fuselage?
From Don Stackhouse :
I'd recommend the same thing we use for the 'C' and 'D' Monarchs. We use a
1/8" thick by 1/2" wide spruce or birch ply finger peg, 2.75" long seems to
be about right. Cut 2 windows in the fuselage sides just above the lower
carbon longerons, 1/2" chord x 1/8" high, with the trailing edge of the
windows at 3" aft of the leading edge bulkhead. Congratulations, your
Monarch is now "windows compatible".
Slip the peg through the windows, with equal amounts sticking out either
side. Use epoxy and fiberglass tape or chopped fibers to reinforce the area
around the joints between the peg and the windows on the inside of the
fuselage. Some microballoons in the mix will also help keep the weight down.
Taper the leading edges of the pegs outside of the fuselage so that the
pegs are about 1/8" wide at the tip. Scallop the trailing edges a little to
fit your fingers. Laminate some 1/8" to 1/4" balsa on top of the pegs to
get a little more thickness at the trailing edge, for a more comfortable
finger rest surface. Carve the balsa to match the profile of the pegs, then
sand an airfoil shape into the leading edges. Slightly round the trailing
edges till it feels right for your fingers. When you're done the pegs
should look like little delta wings with blunt, scalloped trailing edges.
